The most accessible destinations in Europe to travel to this summer

Los destinos más accesibles de Europa para viajar este verano

Europe has been getting more expensive for years. The classic summer destinations—Mallorca, the Amalfi Coast, the Greek islands—are at all-time highs, and every season feels more touristy and costlier. The good news is that the Europe that is still affordable does exist. You just have to know where to look.

We are not talking about sacrificing quality or traveling uncomfortably. We are talking about destinations that combine landscape, gastronomy, coast, or culture at a level comparable—sometimes superior—to the big names, but with prices that have not yet fully adjusted to the demand.

We have selected seven. Each with its own personality, its best time during the summer, and a detail that almost no one tells you before you go. Let’s get started.

How to make a summer in Europe worth it (without giving anything up)

Before we dive into the destinations, here’s an inconvenient truth: the destination matters, but how you travel matters more. There are those who go to Albania and spend €1,500 in a week, and those who go to Italy and return having spent €700. The difference isn't in the country, it's in when you book, how you get around, and what decisions you make during the trip.

The basic rule to keep a European summer from breaking the bank is this: avoid the last fortnight of July and the first of August. Those two weeks concentrate so much demand that prices can double. If you can leave in the second half of June, the first two weeks of July, or the end of August and September, you’ve already done half the work.

Before you begin

📅 Best windows: June 15–30 · July 1–15 · August 25–September 15. The last week of August is usually 30–40% cheaper than the peak.

✈️ Flights: book 8–12 weeks in advance. Low-cost airlines from Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, and Seville cover almost all of Europe for less than €100 round trip if you book early.

🏨 Accommodation: guesthouses and local apartments outperform hotels in value for money in countries like Albania, Poland, or Portugal. Always check Booking + Airbnb before deciding.

🚗 About cars: in countries like Albania or Slovenia, renting a car multiplies what you can see. In Prague or Krakow, public transport and occasional taxis are more efficient.

The 7 most affordable European destinations for this summer

We have ordered them from least to most well-known, not by preference. Each one offers a different experience and fits a different type of traveler. Below you will find a comparison table to help you decide which one is yours.

🌊 Mediterranean Riviera

Albania

Ionian Coast · Tirana · Berat

The secret that is starting to get out, but you're still in time. The Albanian Riviera has waters as turquoise as the Greek ones at prices that remind you of the Mediterranean from twenty years ago. Ksamil, Dhërmi, and Himarë are mandatory stops.

Combine the coast with the interior: Berat (UNESCO World Heritage), an increasingly vibrant Tirana, and Theth for nature. A local dinner with house wine costs around €12–15.

Beach Culture Gastronomy
Budget/day €35–55
🏰 Historic cities

Poland

Krakow · Gdansk · Warsaw

If you have been thinking since last year that Poland is just Auschwitz and not much else, think again. Krakow is one of the most beautiful cities in Central Europe, with an intact old town and a nightlife that few expect. Gdansk provides a Baltic coast to escape the heat.

A good dinner in Krakow is around €15–20. Direct flights from Spain available year-round.

Culture Nightlife Cool climate
Budget/day €45–65
☀️ Deep Mediterranean

Southern Italy and Sicily

Puglia · Calabria · Eastern Sicily

Not all of Italy is expensive. What's expensive is the Florence–Rome–Amalfi axis. Puglia, Calabria, and Sicily remain textbook Italian Mediterranean, with coast, top-tier gastronomy, and baroque towns waiting to be discovered, all at much more reasonable prices.

A local trattoria: €20–25. Accommodation in agriturismo or B&B: from €60/night in July.

Beach Gastronomy Baroque towns
Budget/day €70–100

❄️ Extreme nature

Iceland

Ring Road · Reykjavik · Westfjords

Iceland is expensive, but there is a way to make it affordable. The trap is thinking in terms of hotels and restaurants; the trick is campervan + Bonus supermarkets. This way, a 10-day trip to the most amazing country in Europe drops from €4,000 to €1,500.

In summer there is almost 24h sunlight, the roads are open, and prices rise less than in other destinations. Book your campervan 4 months in advance.

Nature Adventure Road trip
Budget/day €100–140
🏞️ Affordable Alps

Slovenia

Ljubljana · Lake Bled · Soča

The alternative to Switzerland, Austria, and Northern Italy at a third of the price. Ljubljana is a small and charming capital, Lake Bled appears on every postcard, and the Soča Valley is pure alpine nature for hiking and rafting.

You can cover the whole country in a week by car. A small country, but dense with landscapes.

Nature Hiking Couple
Budget/day €60–85
🍺 City getaway

Prague

Czech Republic · 4–5 days

For those looking for a short and affordable city break, Prague is still the answer. Beautiful to an absurd degree, with beer at €2.50 a pint and a gastronomy that is no longer just heavy meat. Good direct flights all summer.

Ideal to combine with Karlovy Vary or Český Krumlov if you want to leave the capital.

City Short getaway Budget-friendly
Budget/day €55–80
🌿 Atlantic North

Northern Portugal

Porto · Douro Valley · Minho

If the Algarve seems expensive this year, look north. Northern Portugal maintains much more reasonable prices, offers the Atlantic (cooler climate), spectacular gastronomy, and Douro wineries. Porto remains one of the European cities with the best value for money.

Combines perfectly with a weekend in Galicia if you are coming from Spain.

Gastronomy Wines Atlantic coast
Budget/day €65–90

How to make any European destination more affordable in summer

Beyond the destination, there are travel decisions that make the difference between spending €800 and spending €1,500 for the same week. These are the ones that have the most impact.

  1. Fly on a Tuesday or Wednesday. The difference with a Friday or Sunday can be €80–150 per leg in peak season. If you work remotely a couple of days, it pays off.
  2. Book accommodation with free cancellation and monitor the price. Hotels and Airbnb usually lower prices 3–4 weeks before if they don't fill up. Have a plan A reserved, and keep an eye on it in case it's worth switching.
  3. Mix hotel nights with guesthouses or apartments. Two nights in a nice hotel + three in local accommodation pays off and adds more experience than five nights in the same average hotel.
  4. Cook at least one meal a day. In countries like Italy, Slovenia, or Portugal, local supermarkets are a mini-gastronomic experience. Eating from the market one day instead of at a restaurant lowers your daily budget by 30%.
  5. Compare car rentals on aggregators, not on direct websites. Discover Cars, Rentalcars, and Skyscanner Cars usually have prices 20–30% lower than going direct to Avis or Europcar.
  6. Paid attractions often have free entry one day a month or a free time slot. Museums, viewpoints, palaces. 10 minutes of searching before the trip equals direct discounts.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most affordable destination in Europe to visit this summer?

Albania is, by far, the destination with the best value for money for combining beach, culture, and gastronomy. A one-week trip can cost less than €500, excluding flights. If you are looking for a city instead of a coast, Poland and the Czech Republic are the most cost-effective options.

Is it a good idea to travel to Europe in July and August?

Yes, but try to avoid the last two weeks of July and the first two of August, which are the two most expensive and crowded weeks of the year. The windows in June, the first half of July, and after August 25th see prices drop by 25% to 40% compared to the peak.

How much money do I need for a one-week vacation in Europe this summer?

It depends on the destination. A week in Albania or Poland can be done comfortably for €600–€800, excluding flights. Southern Italy or Slovenia range between €800–€1,000. Iceland is the exception: even when optimizing with a campervan, a week is hard to get under €1,000 per person, excluding flights.

Is it better to book well in advance or wait for last-minute deals?

For summer flights, book in advance: the ideal time is to book between 8 and 12 weeks ahead. For accommodation, the rule is different: book with free cancellation and monitor prices, as they tend to adjust downward in the 3–4 weeks prior if it is not fully booked.

Is it safe to travel to Albania since it's a less touristy destination?

Yes. Albania is one of the safest countries in the Mediterranean according to official European indices, with a very low crime rate for travelers. Tourism infrastructure is less developed than in Greece or Italy, but that is precisely what keeps prices affordable. It is advisable to rent a car and book accommodation in advance, especially on the coast.

Where can I find good flight prices to Europe in the summer?

Google Flights and Skyscanner remain the most efficient for comparing flexible dates. For direct flights from Spain, Ryanair, Vueling, and Wizz Air account for the majority of affordable routes to Eastern Europe, the Balkans, and the Baltics. The key is not the search engine; it is being flexible with your dates: moving your trip by two days can change the total price.

Traveling to Europe this summer on a reasonable budget is still possible. You just have to look a little outside the usual saturated hubs and accept that the best version of the Mediterranean — or the Alps, or the Atlantic — is not always the most well-known.
