Deciding where to travel for New Year's doesn't always start with choosing a destination. Sometimes the first decision is another: do you want to spend the last days of the year in the cold or in the sun?, do you prefer a city or several days of travel?, are you looking to celebrate New Year's Eve away or simply make the most of the holidays?
To end 2026, we have gathered very different destinations, from European cities that work well for a few days' getaway to longer trips for those who want to start 2027 away from home.
The idea is not to travel further, but to choose a place that fits the time you have and the way you want to say goodbye to the year.
Where to travel for New Year's depending on the type of trip you are looking for
Before booking, we would start with a simple question: what do you want to find when you arrive?
- A European city: Budapest, Prague, or Vienna.
- A few days of warmth: the Canary Islands, Marrakech, or Cape Verde.
- A long trip: Thailand, Mexico, or Costa Rica.
- Winter and snow: Iceland or the Alps.
- A getaway without leaving Spain: Madrid, Granada, or the Canary Islands.
Budapest: thermal baths, cafés, and December cold
Budapest is one of the cities we would choose if you want to feel like you are traveling in winter.
The cold is part of the trip, but so are the thermal baths, historic cafés, the banks of the Danube, and Hungarian cuisine dinners. It is easy to organize it in three or four days and combine city visits with a slower afternoon.
If you are thinking about traveling during these dates, we have prepared a complete guide to Budapest in December.
Prague: a European getaway to end the year
Prague works especially well for a first winter getaway in Central Europe.
The historic center allows you to walk through much of the city, while cafés, beer halls, and restaurants help alternate hours on the street with indoor plans.
For New Year's, we would book accommodation in advance and avoid organizing too many excursions outside the city if you only have three or four days.
Vienna: cafés, music, and a city to explore without rushing
If you prefer a slightly more relaxed city, Vienna may fit better.
December allows you to combine architecture, museums, historic cafés, concerts, and the last days of the Christmas atmosphere. It is a destination that is especially easy to organize if you want to spend several days in a single city without the need to rent a car.
Marrakech: trading winter for milder days
Marrakech is one of the easiest options if you are looking to change the weather without taking a trip that is too long.
During the day you can explore the Medina, gardens, and neighborhoods like Gueliz, and leave a hammam, a rooftop terrace, or a dinner inside a riad for the late afternoon.
In our guide to Marrakech in December, you will find more information about the weather, what to do, and where to stay.
Canary Islands: New Year's without leaving Spain
If the goal is to find mild temperatures without taking a long-distance trip, the Canary Islands remain one of the most practical options.
Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, or Fuerteventura allow you to combine nature, restaurants, towns, and time outdoors.
We would choose the island based on the type of trip, rather than just looking for a beach: Lanzarote for landscape and architecture, Tenerife to combine nature and gastronomy, or Fuerteventura if you want to give more weight to the coast.
Cape Verde: warmth and a few days by the Atlantic
Cape Verde can be an interesting alternative if you want to leave Europe without planning a trip that is too complex.
The choice of island matters a lot. Sal and Boa Vista are more oriented toward the beach, while Santo Antão makes more sense for those who want to walk and discover the landscape of the archipelago.
Thailand: if you have at least ten days
For a longer trip, Thailand fits especially well at the end of December.
We would not try to see everything on a single route. Bangkok can be combined with the north or with a few days on the coast, paying special attention to which beach area works best at this time of year.
It is a trip that deserves more days than a European getaway: if you only have one week, we would choose another destination.
Mexico: culture, gastronomy, and several possible trips
Mexico allows you to plan completely different trips depending on the time available.
Mexico City and Oaxaca form an especially interesting combination if you want to prioritize culture and gastronomy. With more days, you can add a coastal area or continue toward another region of the country.
For New Year's, we would avoid trying to join too many areas that are separated from each other. It is preferable to get to know two places with time than to turn the trip into a succession of domestic flights.
Costa Rica: nature to start the year away
Costa Rica makes sense if you want to dedicate the end-of-year holidays to a trip focused on nature.
Volcanoes, jungle, wildlife, and the coast allow you to build very different routes, although the distances make it advisable to have more than a week.
Here too, we would reduce the number of stages: constantly changing accommodation can end up taking up a significant part of the trip.
Iceland: if you are looking for real winter
Iceland at these dates is practically the opposite of a sun trip.
There are few hours of daylight, low temperatures, and weather conditions that can change quickly. In return, winter allows you to look for northern lights, explore snowy landscapes, and enjoy thermal baths.
We would not organize a route that is too rigid. In December, it is advisable to leave room to adapt the plans to the conditions of each day.
The Alps: New Year's Eve between mountains and snow
If skiing is part of the trip, the Alps allow you to organize a few days in the mountains around New Year's.
Switzerland, France, Italy, and Austria offer very different options, from large resorts to mountain towns where the trip does not have to revolve exclusively around skiing.
At these dates, we would book accommodation well in advance, especially if you want to be in a specific resort.
Where to travel for New Year's if you are looking for warmth
If you already have clear that you want to spend the last days of December with mild temperatures, there is no need to compare winter destinations.
We have gathered the Canary Islands, Marrakech, Cape Verde, Riviera Maya, Costa Rica, Thailand, Maldives, and other options in our guide to warm destinations for New Year's.
Where to travel for New Year's without leaving Spain
Not all New Year's trips need a plane.
Madrid
Madrid makes sense if you want a city atmosphere, restaurants, exhibitions, and a New Year's Eve very linked to the streets of the center.
Granada
Granada allows you to combine a few days in the city with Sierra Nevada if you want to add mountains to the trip.
Canary Islands
The clearest option if you are looking for mild temperatures and want to keep traveling within Spain.
A rural house
We would also consider the opposite option to big celebrations: rent a house with friends or family and turn the trip into the New Year's Eve plan itself.
How many days you need depending on the destination
- 3–4 days: Budapest, Prague, Vienna, Marrakech, or Madrid.
- 5–7 days: Canary Islands, Cape Verde, Iceland, or a mountain getaway.
- 10 days or more: Thailand, Mexico, or Costa Rica.
At the end of the year, the holidays can seem longer on the calendar than they really are. Before booking a distant destination, we would also count the flights and domestic travel.
How to choose a destination for New Year's
Think about the weather first
Deciding between winter and warmth greatly reduces the options and avoids comparing trips that have little to do with each other.
Calculate the actual travel days
For a four-day getaway, a European city is usually better utilized than a destination on the other side of the world.
Decide how much weight New Year's Eve has in the trip
Not all destinations need a big celebration. You can choose the place for what it offers during the rest of the trip and leave the night of the 31st in the background.
Book the important things and leave room
New Year's is a high-demand season. We would book flights, accommodation, and any restaurant or experience you really want to do in advance, but avoid filling every day with reservations.

Our selection to end 2026 traveling
There is no single destination that works for everyone.
For a few days, we would stick with a European city or Marrakech. To look for warmth, we would look at the Canary Islands or Cape Verde. And if you have longer holidays, Thailand, Mexico, or Costa Rica allow you to turn the end of the year into a complete trip.
The key is to choose the destination after deciding what type of trip you want to take, and not the other way around.
